    : An early Stoneware Souvenir Beer Mug for “
    Bezirk’s 26th Turnfest
    ” in Syracuse, 12oz capacity, CNY Pottery aka White’s of Utica (NY), c.1896.
    Rare
    .
    Molded and slightly tapered in the form of a miniature German Stein with fine details and cobalt highlights throughout. The photos are probably the best description.
    Background
    : The
    Turnfest
    was a German Gymnastic Festival in which various
    Turnverein
    Clubs would compete over several days, likely over the course a weekend (see below).
    There are also some political references on the Mug as well. The highly-unpopular
    Raines Bill
    , which became Law in the Spring of 1896, increased Liquor Taxes and
    prohibited Sunday drinking
    , among other things.
    The result were so-called “
    Raines Hotels
    ” serving up the infamous “
    Raines Sandwich

    Condition
    : Excellent to Near Mint (my highest rating) overall with attractive form, very strong color and desirable subject matter.
    Slight base wear consistent with age, use and handling, as shown.
    Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections, including minor clay separation at the handle terminal, noted for complete descriptive accuracy.
