The original Sound Blaster AWE64 was introduced in November 1996 and replaced the AWE32. With a significantly shorter length, it offered similar capabilities to its predecessor, but also received some notable improvements. In fact, this is an updated revision of the AWE32 with a reduced cost, improved component quality and smaller dimensions. At the heart of the AWE64 is the EMU8000 synthesizer, which is integrated in one chip with Creative's DSP and equipped with the E-mu 3D system for creating a surround sound effect.
AWE64, as the name implies, supports more polyphonic voices than its predecessor, but there are 32 of them left in hardware, and another 32 are emulated in software. This is due to the WaveGuide (or WaveSynth) WT synthesizer, which generates the sound of the instrument instead of taking it from the library in memory. WaveGuide is installed into the system as a driver and creates an additional MIDI device with 32-voice polyphony.
