    Description

RARE Vintage 19thC Pink Peach Mochaware Art Pottery Victorian British 6" Quart Pot w/ handle Mug NICE!
Some crazing, misfire pocks-good condition for age.
The last two photos are with a bright light on the side mark, in reality it is hard to read and quite faded.
This is a British Victorian beer mug or Quart Pot pre 1901. The incised “VR” stamp is the Weights and Measures inspectorate’s mark, introduced to assure the client they were getting what they paid for. ‘VR’ for Queen Victoria. The number underneath is the region.
“71” is for Newcastle Upon Tyne, so the North East of England. The old heart of the shipbuilding and manufacturing industry. A Quart, I guess signifies it was hard, hot work!
These were still being used to serve beer in pubs between the wars in the provinces, but I think they’d died out after WW1 in big cities. George Orwell wrote about how he preferred his beer from one of these pink mugs. Generically, it’s known as ‘Mochaware’, and it seems to be particularly popular Stateside. You rarely ever see it in the UK.
Thanks for the tip Guy...owe you a pint!
